Prowling the Gulf of Guinea in search of a notorious American slaver, U.S.S. Jamestown houses a ship’s company on the cusp of disintegration in the spring of 1861. Festering personal animosities burst into the open when the captain is killed. Arriving for repairs at the British port of Freetown, the crew hears of Fort Sumter. Political tensions explode requiring each officer and man aboard to resolve his own conflicting loyalties as Jamestown mimics the nation’s slide into sectional conflict. To avoid an international incident, Jamestown departs abandoning those of her crew suspected of Southern sympathies. Marooned in West Africa, Midshipman Charles Sweet and Lieutenant of Marines Aaron Bonney must overcome their personal animosities to lead two-dozen Southerners home through diplomatic complications, romantic entanglements, local warfare, and conflict with the United States Navy. Faced with crises that would daunt a commodore, only a combination of dash, courage, quick wits, and inconceivable luck can get them home to war.

Set against the colorful backdrop of the British Colony of Sierra Leone and the African-American Republic of Liberia, this carefully researched, accurately detailed story brings alive the human and historical turmoil of a nation and a naval service spiraling into civil war.

"CONFLICTING LOYALTIES addresses many interesting questions. How did the effects of the Civil War extend beyond the borders of the United States? What were the relations between those in the military from different part of the country, what were their perspectives about the slavery issue, and how complicated was the master – slave relationship? How might U.S. military units away from the United States react to the dissolution of the Union? Hib Kline uses these questions as a jumping off point for a complex and fascinating novel of personal and political conflict, blood, friendship, loyalty, humor, tenderness, lust, love, and naval war in a most overlooked locale, West Africa."
-- Alex S. Rosser, PhD, former President, Wornall/Majors House Museums, Inc.

"CONFLICTING LOYALTIES is a well-spun yarn, full of salt, spray, and red-blooded characters. Hib Kline's tale of the Marines of the Civil War era, masterly weaving fictional and historical entities and events into the novel, measures up to C.S. Forester's Hornblower series."
-- David M. Sullivan, author of the four-volume THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS IN THE CIVIL WAR

He and his wife Christine have a home in Kansas City and a farm in nearby Centerview, Missouri.

Conflicting Loyalties Navy Gray Book 1 eBook Hibberd V B Kline

I would characterize "Conflicting Loyalties" as a plot-driven historical novel. Author Kline developed an excellent storyline that is both intriguing and engorged with the stuff of place and period. Like me, you may read the book as avidly for its Civil War era detail as to see how things work out with the characters.

Clearly, Mr. Kline has a deep knowledge of American naval history and the military customs of the day. From the first pages, I was thoroughly immersed in the time and place of the novel and didn't surface until a bout of reading was done. The settings, from geography to the ships, all the way down to articles of clothing, were well-drawn. There were moments when I had to set the Kindle aside just to enjoy that sense of being there. The action sequences were compelling and had the ring of truth.

It has been about a month since I finished reading "Conflicting Loyalties," and I hold firm to a three-and-a-half star rating. The author handled the embedded racial issues very well, especially given his use of the slang of that time and his attempt to reflect the mid-19th Century culture in his characters. Unfortunately, however, some of the major characters did not fare so well. They defaulted to contrived, one-dimensional, static. The relationship between Bonney and Sweet was especially annoying--to the point I found myself snickering about it.

This distraction injured the work but not mortally. I enjoyed it and you will, too, especially if this sort of historical fiction is up your alley.

Conflicting Loyalties Navy Gray Book 1 eBook Hibberd V B Kline Reviews

It waver good
I highly recommend this book. Kline's Civil War novel is historical fiction at its best. The transatlantic slave trade triggers the compelling story about how the crew of an American ship, sailing from Africa back home, turns on each other. Kline's grasp of nautical facts and Civil War history makes his novel come alive. I felt as if I was there as the drama played out.
I have heard Mr. Kline speak in person and I read this book with his voice in my head which made it a remarkable read!!
This is a great read. The characters are different from each other, yet they are complete and convincing. The story is very believable and based on historical fact. The story builds to a climatic ending that does not disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. If you like stories based on history, you will too.
As a fan of the age of sail Naval novels, this was outstanding. It kept me captivated. I found it not only was an accurate depiction of the tyrants that Captains at sea could be, but I learned an immense amount about the earl years of Sierra Leone, Liberia, and how the freed slaves became slavers. A very interesting plot of conflicting loyalties in the Navy as our nation slipped into Civil War. Wow!
In the spirit of Forester and O'Brian, Kline takes us into the lives of sailors and marines during a pivotal period of American history. His attention to detail leads the naval "novice" through the terminology and technology of the age of sail and steam. Meanwhile, the more seasoned veteran is entertained by the twists and turns of a story that describes the personal conflicts experienced by members of a naval service being torn apart by civil war.

I am impressed by Mr. Kline's objectivity in regards to the passions that inflamed our nation during the War Between the States. The conversations between characters serves to describe the various causes of the conflict and their reasons for choosing the "side" that they will support.

Applause to Mr. Kline for taking the naval history novel genre into a different period. And thanks for giving the Marines a prominent place in the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this engaging exploration of what could have transpired onboard a US ship populated with a mix of Northen and Southern sailors who learn of Fort Sumter while in pursuit of a ship off the coast of West Africa. The characters are well drawn and skillfully used to reveal the story line. A mix of fictional and historical characters along with a wealth of detail about everyday life in the civil war era makes kept me turning the pages. The setting of West Africa is unique and provides an intriguing background to explore the issues of slavery both in the states and the world at the time.
I had the pleasure of meeting the author who was our docent for a tour of the Steamboat Arabia Museum in Kansas City (a must see for any history buff). I look forward to the further adventures of his characters.
